More Lake Effect Snow

HAMweather Advisory Center

HAMweather Advisory Center

Heavy lake effect snow will occur again over the Great Lakes today and tomorrow as the strongly amplified trof holds position allowing shortwave energy to eject over the region. Forecast strong north to northwesterly low level wind flow with the accompanying cold air advection suggests that the areas of highest accumulations will be south to southeast of Lakes Michigan, Erie, and Superior. Accumulations above 12″ in some locations are possible.

Additional upslope snow is in store for Appalachia today where areas in West Virginia will receive another 3-4″ of snow above existing accumulations. Further north in western Maryland, and Pennsylvania such as the Laurel Highlands will receive higher accumulations on the order of 8-10″ with emphasis on western slopes and hilltops.

A weak Pacific system will bring a dusting of snow to Montana today, on the order of 2-4″. Temperature profiles exhibit a possibility of warming during the afternoon hours that will cause melting of snow on the roadways and hillsides, that will then refreeze in the evening hours, causing the potential for dangerous driving conditions.

To stay abreast of the latest warnings and advisories be sure to use the HAMweather Advisory Center, and of course our popular Radar Center to view active precipitation and warnings in your area.

Where In The World Can We Go To Be Warm?

As I was flitting about town today running various errands, I would overhear people complaining about the cold temperatures, and think quietly to myself how I agree with their assessment. During my lunch at Bob Evans, a nice couple sitting across the aisle was discussing this very issue, as a woman said to her husband “I wonder where in the world we could go that is warm today?” So I thought, why don’t I answer that question for HAMweather fans? =)

One product, or perhaps better stated ‘suite’ of products, that we have not released yet is a vast array of computer model products that I created for various customers over the years, and for my introductory students to use during classes for forecasting purposes, where I would teach my advanced students the techniques necessary for creating computer graphics, and using advanced techniques for analyzing atmospheric and climate conditions over space and time.

Since the lovely couple at Bob Evans brought up the topic of world temperatures, today I decided to share with you worldwide forecast surface temperatures, so you can decide where you might like to go =)

The animation below is the GFS forecast surface temperatures at 3 hour intervals out through next Friday (November 28) at 6z. In other words a forecast out 180 hours = 7.5 days out. When viewing the image people often say “it looks like the bright colors are moving along the image,” which indeed they are. This is the affect of daytime heating as the sun’s rays move from “right to left” across Earth’s surface, or of course from “east to west” due to Earth’s rotation. Also note that this image has not been made to look “pretty,” it is just raw data that I play with from time to time =)

It is fun to view various aspects of temperature changes as the day progresses. For example, examine the temperature changes along Andes Mountains of western South America, is a distinct pattern present due to its elevation?

Can you see other similar features around the world? Perhaps the Mexican plateau (a.k.a Mesa Central), the Himalayas and the Tibetan High, the Atlas Mountains of Morroco and Tunisia, the Great Rift Valley and Ethiopian Highlands of Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia, the Australian Alps east of the great Murray-Darling Basin, and of course North America’s famous Rocky Mountains plus many more. For those with even a basic interest in weather, viewing the animation over and over again can truly be an educational experience!

So, let’s get back to the question, where in the world can we go to be warm? Well, quite a few places! Of course local politics of an area you may wish to visit may play a role, and at least in my case, the costs of travel involved can be astronomical. For example, the Great Barrier Reef is one of our world’s most beautiful natural resources, and is listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world (wiki). There are many destinations to choose from, but for this example we will use Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Note the HAMweather forecast shows highs in the 80′s for the forseeable future, with lows, oh how horrible, in the high 70s°F.

Amazingly I just conducted a quick search on Yahoo travel, and learned that flight costs vary between an astounding low value of $2,980 round-trip on Qantas Airways, to an outrageous $21,554 via Japan Airlines and United.

Rather than rambling on, I will allow you to view our animation and determine where you might like to go! I can recommend Belize (HAMweather Forecast), and of course Aruba (HAMweather Forecast), where a former graduate collegue of mine is a meteorologist. So where would you like to go! =)

More on weather tomorrow, as today I dream of a vacation I’ll never be able to take! =)

cheers,

Weather Update, November 19, 2008: BrrrRrrrRrrr

HAMweather Climate Center - New Weather Records

HAMweather Climate Center - New Weather Records

The HAMweather team is spread all over the United States, from the Pacific Northwest, to the deep south, to the frozen tundra of the north. As I went out for my latte this morning, breathing in the cold air that formed icicles on the bronchioles of my lungs, I thought how nice that the team in the south enjoyed sub-freezing temperatures this morning! To them, I would like to say: nanananana!

A total of 166 weather records were recorded for yesterday (November 18, 2008): 69 for snowfall, 56 new high temperatures (for the western United States as mentioned yesterday), 14 record low temperatures and so forth. Please recall that record low temperatures that occurred this morning (lowest temperatures are most often in the wee hours of the morning) will show up in tomorrow’s records for today. In other words the high temperatures I mentioned yesterday (high temperatures most often occur in the afternoon) were displayed in the records for yesterday that are available in our Climate Center today, but since the record lows occur most often in the early morning hours, they will be displayed in tomorrow’s Climate Center posting. Slightly confusing no? =)

The cold temperatures will remain in place for awhile, as a weak clipper makes its way across the upper midwest. A quick glance at a few cities shows that:

  • New York City, with a current temperature of 34°F, will be lucky to hit 40°F today, and is forecast to have high temperatures hovering around 40°F all the way through Sunday.
  • Buffalo, NY, with a current temperature of 30°F, will likely stay just shy of the freezing mark today, with a chance for some more lake effect snow as the weak clipper system moves through
  • Washington, D.C. will have overnight lows below freezing for the balance of the week, with an opportunity to have afternoon high temperatures above 50°F early next week
  • Yorba Linda, CA undergoing cleanup efforts from the recent fires can at least revel in their warm temperatures with afternoon highs near 80°F for the next few days, settling around the comfortable 72°F beginning next week
  • Nashville, TN where the game of the year will occur at LP Field when Brett Favre and the New York Jets will end the undefeated season for the Tennessee Titans on Sunday will continue to experience low temperatures below freezing, with a game time temperature of around 53°F with a chance of rain on Sunday… Go Brett!

I still do not see anything dramatic on the tropical front, but continue to have hopes for a little something before the season ends. The UP of Michigan will experience lake effect snow as the weak clipper moves through, ending sometime late Friday afternoon, while the temperature distribution mentioned yesterday still holds true for today.

As always stay tuned to your favorite weather outlet, stay informed, and stay safe!

Weather Update, November 18, 2008: Prozac Nation, Temperatures go Bonko!

Forecast Temperature Animation

Forecast Temperature Animation

As northerly winds control the eastern United States, a strong ridge of high pressure maintains itself in the west that will result in more record low temperatures in the east, and record highs in the west.

At left is our HAMmodel NAM 2 Meter Forecast Temperature Animation (3 hour increments) through 84 hours (ending 00z Saturday) initialized 12z this morning. As you view the animation, note the higher temperatures pop up in the Western U.S., while the 32°F isotherm (temperature of interest) surges south covering the majority of the eastern United States. This type of activity is normal this time of year and will bring with it some record temperatures.

To view the records that occur today as the southeastern U.S. will finally feel the cold weather that we have been enduring in the north (ha ha!), and the western United States flaunts their warmth (boo! lol) be sure to view the Climate Section of our site, as it is updated daily to keep you abreast of the latest developments!

Forecast Rain Animation

Forecast Rain Animation

Since the ridge of High Pressure is dominating the east, liquid precipitation will be absent for the western section of our country until Thursday as a new system begins streaming in for the Pacific Northwest, as rains will continue offshore in the Atlantic for the next few days with some dabblings of rain in the Bahamas and Florida.

At left is our NAM 84 Hour (ending 00z Saturday) Liquid Precipitation Animation (3 hour increments) to give you a graphical overview of what the model is thinking at the moment.

On the subject of rain, tropical development is not very favorable over the next few days as well for the Atlantic as we continue our progression into winter weather patterns.

Forecast Snowdepth Animation

Forecast Snowdepth Animation

Lake effect snows will begin trailing off today as the area of high pressure mentioned above moves into the great lakes region. Our Advisory Center shows that most of the lake effect snow warnings have been removed as of the time of this writing, with the balance likely to be canceled later today.

New snows will begin forming later in week for the Pacific Northwest, Northern Rockies, and Northern Great Plains. At left our HAMmodel 84 Hour Forecast Snowdepth Animation (3 hour increments) displays where the snow is projected to fall for the next few days (and where previous snowfall is projected to melt). Nothing magnanimous is forecast to occur in the immediate future, however the potential does exist for something exciting further out, but we will wait until we get closer to make any firm projections.

Below I have provided the spotter reports out of the NWS Office in Cleveland, OH for you again. Recall they are grouped by new snowfall, and ‘snow on the ground.’
